Our trip to CERN (2)

After the tour of the CMS Facility, we had lunch. The food was absolutely delicious! It was interesting to see how many people there were working at CERN, and the food hall was completely packed with other students like ourselves as well as workers and staff.

After Lunch, we met with Professor Roger Jones, who escorted the group to his group's offices. We then had a question and answer session with another School from Accrington and learned much about Particle Physics - I personally loved hearing about the theoretical sub-atomic particle known as the "Tachyon" of which I learned this particle is theoretically faster than light. 

It was really nice to see Professor Roger Jones again, especially in another country, and he allowed us to see the ATLAS Control Centre, of which he was present when they discovered the Higgs Boson. 

It was such a great day, and we all enjoyed the great opportunity! Not every day can you say that you have been to CERN!

On the way back from Geneva....

After a wonderful time in Geneva, it is now time to go home. We have all had a brilliant time, and have had such a great opportunity to visit CERN that we will remember for the rest of our lives.

Our trip to CERN (1)

It is the 11th of July, and the day has finally arrived.  We have just arrived back at the hotel from a spectacular day! 

Although we had to get up at silly o'clock, the early morning get up was worth it! We left the hotel at around 20 to eight to catch a tram, that would end up taking us to the European Organization for Nuclear Research (aka CERN!) 

When we arrived in our teams, we were welcomed with a talk by Dr Marc Goulette. In this talk we learned about the introduction and set up of the CERN facility.

After the initial introduction, we were then taken to the CMS facility. We were extremely lucky that we had the opportunity to have a tour of the CMS facility, and to actually see the CMS in person!

A trip to Lancaster University....

The weather on Tuesday the 1st of July was outstanding, it was such a nice day to visit Lancaster University for the Science and Technology Taster Day. 

A small group of us from Morecambe Community High School's Sixth Form travelled to the University to experience what students two years older than us would experience on a regular basis.....Lectures! 

We were given the opportunity to receive two lectures from a wide range of different subjects. One of my lectures were delivered by Dr. Phillip Benachour, from the School of Computing and Communications. I really enjoyed the opportunity to see what a University Computer Lab is like, and how it all operates, as well as the chance to try out electronics! 

The other subject I picked was Physics. The Physics lecture consisted of a range of interesting topics of Physics, including Quantum Computing and Plasma. It was another opportunity to see Professor Jim Wild, and to see his love for Space Physics in person!

We also got to see a demonstration of Liquid Nitrogen in action. It was great to see what happens to a plant that is cooled to extremely cold temperatures and smashed against a table! 

A great day was had by all, and it was such a great opportunity to experience what is to come in the future.
