Physics Trip to Blackpool Pleasure Beach!

On the 18th of June, Year 12 students from both the A-Level Physics and the Applied Science Courses went on a trip to Blackpool Pleasure Beach.

On such a glorious day, we had a talk on the Physics involved with Theme Park rides such as the Pepsi Max "Big One" Roller coaster. During the talk, we learned about the G-forces involved on large rides, and how much thought has gone into designing these attractions.

After the talk, we had many hours of fun seeing the Physics in action!

This year so far...

Over this year, numerous lectures were put on at Lancaster University, with many of them being attended by Year 11 and Sixth Form students. One of the many lectures put on by Lancaster University was 'Graphene; small but mighty' and 'What's the matter with antimatter?'. These lectures were put on by Professor Rodger Jones who came to Morecambe High to give a talk on particle physics.

Earlier on this academic year, we had a visit from Professor Jim Wild, a regular to the Island of Svalbard and an expert on the Aurora Borealis and solar activity. Professor Wild gave us a talk on how charged particles from the sun (Coronal Mass ejections) can affect our technology on Earth, potentially overloading power grids and destroying satellite communications. His job at Lancaster University is to predict solar storms and prevent the worst from happening.

Introduction

Hello readers!

This Blog has been set up by Year 12 Students studying Physics at Morecambe Community High School who will be travelling to Geneva in July for a trip to CERN!

The Large Hadron Collider!

On this blog, we will be sharing our experiences of the trip and the other opportunities we have had over this year with regards to Physics!
